My introductory words at the 2018 SINGA General Assembly

(Version Française)

Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Members,

Thank you, each and every one of you and your presence here today.

As President of SINGA, I am very happy to be speaking to you.

As part of my introduction, I would like to focus on three things :

1 – This gathering is an important moment in the life of our association. It’s a moment during which we exercise our internal democracy. We reflect together on our vision, we evaluate what we have achieved and we take decisions together on our common future.

Above all, after being in existence now for a few years, the time has come to reform our governance, and in order to make the right decision, it is very important that everyone participates. We will change our statutes significantly and choose our next governing board which holds an important role.

It is true that we continuously work all year long but today is a more significant symbolic moment because no matter what the different roles are – president, employee, volunteer etc., we all have an equal voice in a democratic setting.

We have experienced directly or indirectly to what extent democracies are fragile and that we must protect them in all of our societal units: families, businesses, associations, etc.

Free enterprise is the model which we strive for in terms of organization. Our yearly assembly is, therefore, all the more, a key moment.

2 – The world as we know it is changing. It is not merely changing, it’s literally experiencing a paradigm shift. We really are living in the famous global village. Something happening on one side of the world will impact the other side of the world. Globalisation is going to magnify some phenomena.

-         Exclusive identity: which creates wars, persecution and which forces people to flee. On the other hand, these migratory flows nourish national identity amongst those such who want to protect themselves: Trump ; Brexit, and in this country, Marine Le Pen.

-         Economic inequalities: Several studies have shown that the economy is becoming more exclusive than before and that the economic gap between social classes and Northern and Southern countries is progressively widening.

-         Climate Change: is no longer a futurist phenomenon but one of which we are witnessing tangible consequences. In the next 30 years, many places across the world will be too hot or too cold to be habitable. The same goes for countries which will be submerged in water. So there will be a multiplication of migratory flows.

If we consider these phenomena from a digital revolution point of view, and notably A.I. which will completely disrupt the economy to such an extent that the majority of the world’s population will become economically useless. Unfortunately, the way in which we organise society is not adapted to these radical changes. When analysing this situation, we understand the extent to which we need to:

-         strengthen cohabitation, culture, and tools to entrepreneurship,

-         rebuild social capital,

-         redefine inclusive identities

The examples of CALM, Finkela, the buddy programme and our media « Trait d’Union » are all models which can inspire the world and serve as alternatives for the re-organisation of our society to make it more inclusive.

Do you realise now the importance of making SINGA a success?

3 – For the past two years, as President of SINGA France, I have been presenting initiatives, projects and social innovations that are the result of great work by a large community of employees, volunteers and partners. We are indeed a large community and I can unfortunately not list here all the members who have contributed to SINGA. But allow me to thank a few people all the same.

On behalf of our community, I would like to thank…
